LILONG STUDIOS: 2025
A COLLABORATION WITH EUNHO KIM, SUMI KIM, SITONG GUO, MENGXI XIN, AND YEON LEE
Lilong Studios is a technical exercise in developing a site analysis, a sustainability assessment and interventions, construction processes and details, facade specifications, and MEP diagrams for a proposed artist residency center: a two-volume building housing a makerspace and artist studios on one side, and a residential stack above a gallery space on the other.
Lilong Studios is located in the historic Lilong District in Shanghai, which contains a regular pattern of one- to two-story wood and brick row houses and thin pedestrian alleyways for access. Our design maintained the slim dimensions of a single row in the district, but took advantage of an edge lot to build vertically. We implemented a full Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glu-Lam structure with a combination of brick rainscreen and unitized curtain wall facades, integrated a Purple Roof water retention system, and added motorized vertical louvers to the South facade to reduce solar heat gain in the summer, while allowing maximum light in the winter months.
